National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA)

 

NASA's ROSES 2009 solicitation is amended to include Interdisciplinary Research in Earth Science. This solicitation offers opportunities for researchers to initiate new and successor interdisciplinary research investigations within the sponsor's Interdisciplinary Research in Earth Science (IDS) program. Proposed research investigations should aim to advance our understanding of Earth system variability, the forcing factors that impact the Earth system, the mechanisms by which and the manner in which the Earth responds to forcing, and the local and regional consequences of global environmental change. They should also seek to improve our capabilities for both prognostic predictions and retrospective simulations of the evolution of the Earth system. NASA's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate is accepting proposals from teams of undergraduate and graduate students for the inaugural Lunabotics Mining Competition. The event will be held at Kennedy Space Center, Fla., May 25-28, 2010. Full competition proposals can include a request for up to $5,000 to cover designing, building, and travel expenses. NASA anticipates funding the first 10 approved team requests. Participants in the competition will design and build excavation systems that could be used for future lunar exploration. Teams will test their designs in a "head to head" challenge to see which design can excavate the most simulated lunar regolith, or dirt, over a specific timeframe. NASA's ROSES 2009 solicitation is amended to include Planetary Mission Data Analysis. The objective of this program is to enhance the scientific return of completed Planetary Science Division missions by broadening the scientific participation in the analysis of data and samples collected by those missions. NASA's ROSES 2009 solicitation is amended to include Mars Data Analysis. The objective of the Mars Data Analysis Program (MDAP) is to enhance the scientific return from missions to Mars conducted by NASA and other space agencies. These include, but are not limited to, the following missions: Mars Pathfinder (MPF), Mars Global Surveyor (MGS), Mars Odyssey (MO), Mars Exploration Rovers (MERs), Mars Express (MEX), Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), and Phoenix (PHX). MDAP broadens scientific participation in the analysis of mission data sets and funds high-priority areas of research that support planning for future Mars missions. NASA's ROSES 2009 solicitation is amended to includes the MOST U.S. Guest Observer - Cycle 2. The sponsor solicits proposals for the acquisition and analysis of new scientific data from the MOST (Microvariability and Oscillations of STars) observatory through a partnership between NASA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). The MOST mission is designed to conduct photometric studies with high precision sufficient to perform stellar asteroseismology studies and other variability analyses of stars and exoplanet systems. The NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) plans to issue a solicitation for multiple Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contracts for a research and development requirement entitled Research and Technologies for Aerospace Propulsion Systems (RTAPS) to support Aeronautics, Communication, Structures & Materials, Space Propulsion. The objective of this proposed effort is to provide a contractual vehicle by which industry will develop, demonstrate, and verify advanced propulsion system technologies as part of NASA's aerospace research programs. Research and development efforts in these technologies will address a wide variety of propulsion issues for subsonic, supersonic, hypersonic and rotorcraft transportation vehicles, as well as addressing issues pertaining to aviation safety and space exploration missions. NASA's ROSES 2009 solicitation is amended to include Space Infrared Telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) Science Investigation Concept Studies. The sponsor is soliciting science investigation concept studies that could be realized with the JAXA/ISAS Space Infrared Telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) mission. The sponsor is considering partnering with JAXA on their SPICA mission platform. This mission seeks to take the next step in investigating the mid (> 5 micrometers) through far (~400 micrometers) infrared portion of the spectrum to observe many astrophysical phenomena from distant galaxies to star and planet forming systems in our own Galaxy. The NASA Office of Education has released a Cooperative Agreement Notice for proposals for NASA K-12 Cooperative Agreements Notice (K-12 CAN). The K-12 CAN effort seeks proposals that incorporate innovative approaches for development and delivery of instructional materials, creates experiences that capture the interest of learners, and actively involves participants in relevant, NASA science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM, content applications. The instructional materials and experiences of the proposal should support secondary level teaching and learning, with a particular emphasis on high school education. The NASA Innovative Partnerships Program and the Comparative Aircraft Flight Efficiency (CAFE) Foundation announced the Green Flight Challenge. The contest is a flight efficiency competition for aircraft that can average at least 100 mph on a 200-mile flight while achieving greater than 200 passenger miles per gallon. NASA's "Minorities Striving and Pursuing Higher Degrees of Success in Earth System Science" initiative was developed by and for underrepresented minorities to facilitate increased participation in Earth system science. Each year, the initiative  engages 30 minority undergraduate and graduate students in a series of activities. "From Earth to the Universe" is a collection of astronomical images that showcase the most dramatic views of the universe. The images represent the incredible variety of astronomical objects that are known to exist -- planets, comets, stars, nebulae, galaxies and the clusters in which they congregate -- and are being exhibited in over 250 locations throughout the world in 2009 and 2010. These exhibits, held in public parks, airports, art centers and at other unique sites, will bring the wonders of the universe right to you. Over 60 countries are scheduled to host a FETTU exhibit. NASA's "Capture the Colorful Cosmos" Astrophotography Project allows students, teachers, individuals and families to "Capture the Colorful Cosmos" this summer. From July through September, participants can use MicroObservatory, an online network of robotic telescopes controlled over the Internet. NASA and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics invite the community to share views of the universe in this exciting astrophotography project. The images taken using online robotic telescopes will be featured on the NASA and International Year of Astronomy Web sites. Anyone with an e-mail address can use the MicroObservatory robotic telescopes to request electronic images of astronomical objects. Participants 13 or younger will need a parent or guardian to enter their photos for them. Photos can be taken all summer long. Universities Space Research Association (USRA)

 

USRA is offering a great way for researchers to connect directly with other researchers at universities, in industry, and at federal centers through its USRA Research Opportunities Program (ROP). USRA Research Institutes, Centers, and Programs are currently located at six NASA centers and a DOE National Laboratory. All have very active research programs and are closely engaged with federal staff and local industry. They also help manage many technical conferences and workshops across a diverse range of space disciplines. Interested individuals may register at the Research Opportunities Program's website in order to select various research topics about which they are interested. Information about research opportunities will be e-mailed to all individuals who have registered to receive notifications in the specific topic areas.

 

U.S. Department of Defense (DOD)

 

DOD has issued a presolicitation announcement for the 2009.3 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I solicitation. Seven DoD components will participate in the 2009.3 solicitation: the Department of the Air Force, Department of the Army, Department of the Navy, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Missile Defense Agency, Defense Logistics Agency, and the Office of Secretary of Defense. Phase I awards, ranging between $70,000 and $100,000, will support testing the scientific, technical, and commercial merit of a particular concept. Eligibility is restricted to U.S. small businesses. National Science Foundation (NSF)

 

NSF invites proposals for the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.  This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research. The first, REU Sites, is based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department, or on interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. A partnership with the Department of Defense supports REU Sites in DoD-relevant research areas. The second is REU Supplements that may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects or may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements. Through three announcements entitled Genetic and Genomic Analysis of Xenopus, several institutes collectively invite R01, R03 and R21 research proposals to exploit and enhance the power of Xenopus as a vertebrate model for biomedical research. Applications are sought that develop new tools or genetic or genomic resources of high priority to the Xenopus research community to advance the detection and characterization of genes, pathways, and phenotypes of interest in development, organogenesis, and in cell biological processes such as cell division, signaling and migration. On or about Aug 29, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute will release three opportunities related to a new six-year program entitled Science Moving TowArds Research Translation and Therapy (SMARTT). SMARTT will support translation to the clinic of novel synthetic, natural, or biologic therapeutic interventions arising in the scientific community for the treatment of heart, lung, and blood diseases. The National Cancer Institute invites R21 proposals for research into exfoliated cells and circulating DNA in cancer detection and diagnosis. The goal is to develop novel technologies for capturing, enriching, and preserving exfoliated abnormal cells from body fluids or effusions as well as methods for concentrating the tumor-derived sub-cellular material for use in biomarker studies. U.S. Department of State

 

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs invites proposals to support up to 6 assistance awards to administer the Community College Initiative Program, which will support study by international undergraduate students in certain technology fields and critical workforce needs at accredited U.S. community colleges. The Bureau anticipates providing $8.5 million for supporting up to 275 students from developing countries in every world region through the program. U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL)

 

The Department of Labor announces the availability of approximately $220 million in grant funds authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 for projects that provide training and placement services to help workers pursue careers within targeted health care and other high growth and emerging industries. "Fields like information technology, advanced manufacturing, wireless and broadband deployment, transportation and warehousing, and biotechnology may be high growth and emerging industries in specific regional economies." The American Federation for Aging Research invites applications for the AFAR-GE Healthcare Junior Investigator Award for Excellence in Aging-Heart Research.
