November 10, 2010 National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) NASA's
Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate has amended its announcement,
"Research Opportunities in Aeronautics 2010," to solicit additional
proposals. With the amendment, the Hypersonics Project of the Fundamental
Aeronautics Program calls for proposals about enabling technologies and
development of a new pool of expertise in two primary areas of interest.
These include air-breathing access to space and entry, descent and landing
of high-mass vehicles in planetary atmospheres. Visit http://nspires.nasaprs.com The
European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA are offering an opportunity to
participate in the Mars 2016 Entry-Descent-Landing (EDL) Demonstrator Module
(EDM) science. ESA will be issuing an Announcement of Opportunity (AO)
for possible science instrumentation to be included on the lander and
associated science investigations. NASA will consider supporting
participation of U.S. investigators as individual Co-Investigators on EDL
surface payload proposals that are submitted from ESA participating states.
Further details or questions concerning this opportunity should be addressed
to: Dr Philippe Crane, NASA ExoMars 2016 Program Scientist, philippe.crane@nasa.gov

Kids in Micro-g is a student experiment design challenge geared toward
grades 5-8. Its purpose is to give students a hands-on opportunity to design
an experiment or simple demonstration that could be performed both in the
classroom and by astronaut crews aboard the International Space Station. NASA
will be accepting experiment proposals through Dec. 8, 2010. Visit http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/science/nlab/experimentchallenge.html Connect
your middle or high school students in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics classes to the exciting world of NASA exploration and discovery
by joining the NASA Explorer Schools project. Incorporate authentic
learning experiences designed around NASA's unique missions into your
classroom to provide relevance to the curriculum by linking STEM classroom
topics to real-world NASA activities. Visit http://explorerschools.nasa.gov NASA
educational materials are available on the new Howtosmile.org website.
Launched by the University of California, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of
Science, the Howtosmile.org website is an online collection of thousands of
hands-on interactive science and math activities dedicated to making learning
exciting and engaging for everyone. All activities at www.howtosmile.org are freely accessible
and never require a registration or subscription. Visit http://howtosmile.org/. To find NASA
materials on the website, do a keyword search for NASA. The
National Community College Aerospace Scholars program is designed
specifically for community college students across the U.S. who are
interested in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Selected participants gain access to an interactive, online learning
experience where they complete Web-based lessons. Participants also travel to
NASA for a three-day experience where they work with NASA engineers and
scientists developing a proposal for a fictitious Martian rover. The only
cost to applicants is a $30 registration fee. Travel costs, food and lodging
are covered by NASA. Applications are available online and must be submitted
by Dec. 9, 2010. Visit https://aerospacescholars.jsc.nasa.gov/NCAS/ NASA's
Web site offers classroom activities, educator guides, posters and other
types of resources that are available for use in the classroom. Materials
are listed by type, grade level and subject. The following items are now
available for downloading. ·
Women at NASA Video -- Grades K-12 -- NASA has many
possibilities for women who study science, technology, engineering and
mathematics. This video gives girls ideas of how they can prepare to work at
NASA by starting young. It also shows clips of women who work at NASA. Visit http://www.nasa.gov/audience/foreducators/topnav/materials/listbytype/Women_at_NASA.html ·
Earth Math -- Grades 6-12 -- This booklet
provides many of the quantitative skills your students will need to make
sense out of climate change. To think quantitatively about climate change,
students must become fluent in working with Celsius and Fahrenheit
temperature scales. Students also should understand the difference between
watts, kilowatts and kilowatt hours; tons and gigatons; and BTUs and tons of
carbon dioxide. All of these units appear in news stories about climate
change and human impacts on the environment. The problems in this guide
include basic mathematics, algebra, geometry and some trigonometric
functions. The one-page assignments are accompanied by one-page answer keys.
Visit http://www.nasa.gov/audience/foreducators/topnav/materials/listbytype/Earth_Math.html ·
Space Math V -- Grades 9-12 -- These activities
comprise a series of 87 practical mathematics applications in space science.
This collection of activities is based on a weekly series of problems
distributed to teachers during the 2008-2009 school year. The problems in
this booklet investigate space phenomena, space travel and mathematics
applications such as planetary nebulae, collapsing gas clouds, space shuttle
launch trajectory, evaluating functions, and differentiation. The problems
are authentic glimpses of modern science and engineering issues, often
involving actual research data. Each word problem includes background
information. The one-page assignments are accompanied by one-page teachers
answer keys. Visit http://www.nasa.gov/audience/foreducators/topnav/materials/listbytype/Space_Math_V.html ·
Do-It-Yourself Podcast Brochure -- Grades 5-12 -- NASA's
Do-It-Yourself Podcast is a topical collection of downloadable video and
audio clips featuring NASA astronauts, scientists and/or engineers. Teachers
and students can mix and mash the video and audio clips to create their own
podcasts. The brochure details how to access the DIY Podcast tool online,
defines "podcast," lists the steps for using DIY Podcast and
explains how to use the DIY Podcast blog. Visit http://www.nasa.gov/audience/foreducators/topnav/materials/listbytype/DIY_Brochure.html ·

Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety invites R18 applications to
support Advances in Patient Safety through Simulation Research. As a
training technique, simulation in health care uses a variety of approaches -
mannequins, task trainers, virtual reality, in situ scenarios, hybrid
configurations, standardized patients - to expose individuals and teams to
realistic clinical challenges. A distinguishing feature of simulation is that
it allows participants to experience the consequences of their decisions and
actions as they learn new skills and address system anomalies in an
environment that does not put patients at risk. Simulation also can be used
as a testbed to identify failure modes and other areas of concern in new
clinical processes, procedures and technologies that might threaten patient
safety. Multiple awards are anticipated. Eligibility is restricted to U.S.
states, local governments, institutions of higher education and nonprofit
organizations. Standard due dates apply for R18 grant applications. More

National Institute on Drug Abuse invites R01 applications that identify
and/or validate chromosomal loci and variations in Molecular Genetics of
Drug Addiction and Related Co-Morbidities. Applications that propose to
examine intermediate phenotypes or endophenotypes to assess the molecular
genetics of drug addiction, addiction vulnerability and/or their associated
co-morbidities and how they are related to drug addiction are especially
encouraged. Also encouraged are genetic, as well as computational and
large-scale genomic approaches, which may include but are not limited to
linkage, linkage disequilibrium, case-control or family-based studies and
integration of data from other databases that may supplement substance abuse
genetics and genomics data. Research topics include, but are not limited to,
those described in the announcement. Multiple awards are anticipated.
Eligibility is unrestricted. Standard due dates apply for R01 grant
applications. More information regarding PA-11-026 is available at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-11-026.html National Science Foundation (NSF) NSF's
