National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA)

NASA's DEVELOP program is a NASA Science Mission Directorate Applied Sciences program that fosters the training and development of students in the atmospheric and Earth sciences. The DEVELOP program extends the application of NASA Earth science research and technology to meet societal needs. Students conduct projects that focus on the practical application of NASA's Earth science research and demonstrate how results can benefit partner organizations and local communities. Advisors and mentors from NASA and partner organizations provide the guidance and support for the program. Students gain experience by using NASA science and technology in a professional setting. Students from high school through doctoral levels are chosen in a competitive application process. The selected students work on teams at eight locations nationwide. Activities are conducted during three 10-week terms per year: summer, fall and spring. Applications for the spring 2010 session are due Nov. 30. Visit http://develop.larc.nasa.gov

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2010 CanSat Competition. This annual competition is open to university and college students from the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. Teams of three to 10 students must design and build a space-type system called a CanSat. Each CanSat is the size of a soda can and must be built according to the specifications released by the competition organizing committee. Participants are involved in the end-to-end life cycle of a complex engineering project, from conceptual design, through integration and test, actual operation of the system, and the conclusion with a post-mission summary and debriefing. All teams entering the CanSat competition are required to have a faculty adviser. The faculty adviser will oversee and be responsible for the conduct of the team at all times during the competition and is strongly encouraged to accompany the team to the competition. Applications are due Nov. 30, 2009. Visit http://www.cansatcompetition.com/

Canadian Space Agency

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has released a request for proposals (RFP) to plan and execute Analogue Missions. Analogue Missions are simulations of space mission operations that take place at analogue sites on Earth; these can also be thought of as Integrated field tests. Sites that are presently used for analogue missions include Devon Island in Nunavut, Pavilion Lake in British Columbia and Axel Heiberg on Elsemere Island in Nunavut. The RFP further defines terrestrial analogue sites as resembling in some key way (e.g. geomorphologically or geochemically) a surface or subsurface environment of another planet. Herein, Analogue Mission can be defined as an integrated set of activities that represent (or simulate) entire mission designs or narrowly focus on specific aspects of planned or potential future planetary exploration missions.
