U.S. Department of Defense (DOD)

 

The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, Atlantic (SSC-LANT) requires services from undergraduate and graduate students and faculty/educational institutions to provide analytical and technical services to support research and development efforts. The Army Research Office (AR0) invites applications for a pilot youth science program, the High School Apprenticeship Program, which will fund the science, technology, engineering, or math apprenticeship of promising high school juniors and seniors to work in a university structured research environment under the direction of existing ARO-sponsored principal investigators serving as mentors. Awards will be made as add-ons to existing single-investigator grants originally awarded under an ARO Broad Agency Announcement that have at least 12 months' period of performance remaining from the date of the Apprenticeship Program proposal submission. NSF invites research proposals for Innovations in Engineering Education, Curriculum, and Infrastructure. The program supports research that addresses three aspects of engineering education: (1) how students best learn the ideas, principles, and practices to become creative and innovative engineers, and how this learning is measured (2) how to more effectively translate successes in engineering education research into widespread practice with consideration of curriculum, student learning, innovation models, and cyber-learning technology, and (3) implementation of programs for students supported by the GI Bill. Up to 40 awards may be made in total from anticipated funding $8.5 million. Eligibility is unrestricted. Proposals are due Jan 20 for area 1 projects and Mar 30 for area 2 and 3 projects. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)

 

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases intends to solicit one application for the Beta Cell Biology (BCBC) Coordinating Center to maintain the ongoing administrative infrastructure for the BCBC. The BCBC Coordinating Center together with participating U01 awardees from RFA-DK-09-011 will constitute the Beta Cell Biology Consortium whose aim is to generate necessary reagents and conduct research that will lead to the development of new cell-based therapies for diabetes. The grants will support multi-disciplinary research performed in a single laboratory or by a small number of investigators that applies an integrative, systems approach to develop knowledge and/or methods to prevent, detect, diagnose, or treat disease or to understand health and behavior. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences invites P42 grant applications for the Superfund Hazardous Substance Research and Training Program. The grants will support coordinated, multi-project, interdisciplinary research programs to address the mandates legislated under the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986, including the development of: 1) advanced techniques for the detection, assessment, and evaluation of the effect on human health of hazardous substances; 2) methods to assess the risks to human health presented by hazardous substances; 3) methods and technologies to detect hazardous substances in the environment; and 4) basic biological, chemical, and physical methods to reduce the amount and toxicity of hazardous substances. The grants specifically target probationary, tenure-track faculty in these academic areas during the first six years of their career. The Talloires Network and the MacJannet Foundation

 

The Talloires Network and the MacJannet Foundation are pleased to announce the second annual MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship and call for nominations of exceptional student civic engagement programs at Talloires Network member institutions. The MacJannet Prize recognizes exceptional student civic engagement initiatives based in Talloires Network member universities around the world and contributes financially to their ongoing public service efforts. Winning programs will demonstrate exemplary service in addressing an issue of global significance such as threats to public health in the developing world, efforts to promote literacy, or assisting the economic development of distressed communities.
